Permanent vs Removable Labels: Choosing the Right Adhesive

One of the most overlooked decisions when ordering labels is the adhesive, but it can matter just as much as the material or print method. Here's how to know whether you need a permanent or removable adhesive for your next order.

Permanent adhesive labels are designed to stay put. Once applied, they bond firmly to the surface and are built to resist peeling, lifting or falling off during storage, transit or everyday handling. This makes them the default choice for most product labelling, shipping labels, barcode labels and packaging, where you need the label to stay exactly where it's placed for the life of the product.

Removable adhesive labels use a lighter tack that allows the label to be peeled away cleanly, without tearing or leaving sticky residue behind. These are useful for temporary pricing, promotional stickers, seasonal labelling, or any situation where the label needs to come off later without damaging the packaging or product underneath.

A good way to decide is to think about the end use. If the label needs to last as long as the product itself, whether that's a shipping label, a barcode or a permanent product label, go with a permanent adhesive. If the label is only needed for a limited time, such as a special offer sticker or a temporary batch code, a removable adhesive will save you the hassle of scraping off leftover residue later.
